Snapdragon 720G, 662, and 460 launched

2020's first-ever processor launch from Qualcomm has been done. And three new processors in Qualcomm Snapdragon 7, 6, and 4 series has been launched. These processors are dubbed as Snapdragon 720G, Snapdragon 662, and Snapdragon 460. All these are 4G SoCs along with support for Wi-FI 6 and Bluetooth 5.1.

“While we see a fast adoption of 5G across geographies globally, we do recognize the phenomenal boost that 4G has given towards enabling broadband connectivity for Indian consumers. 4G will continue to remain a focus area for Qualcomm Technologies for regions like India, where it would stay as a key technology for connectivity,” said Rajen Vagadia, vice president and president, Qualcomm India Pvt. Ltd. “Our goal is to enable our partners to continue creating solutions that offer seamless connectivity access and exceptional mobile experiences, that consumers can count on.”

These processors also support NavIC. In addition to Qualcomm AI Engine, the Snapdragon 720G, Snapdragon 662, and Snapdragon 460 come with the Qualcomm Location Suite that supports up to seven satellite constellations concurrently and leverages navigation system NavIC that has been developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to provide accurate location performance both in urban and remote areas of India.

“The availability of NavIC across multiple mobile platforms will help enhance the geolocation capabilities of smartphones in the region and bring the benefits of this indigenous solution to Indian consumers for their day-to-day use,” said K Sivan, Chairman, ISRO, in a prepared statement.

Snapdragon 720G Specifications

Connectivity section includes Snapdragon X15 LTE modem with support for 3-carrier aggregation, 4×4 MIMO on two carriers, and 256-QAM modulation for speeds up to 800Mbps in downloads. It is an 8nm fabricated chip and includes Kryo 465 CPU with two Cortex-A76 cores at 2.3GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8GHz.

Snapdragon 720G has provided with FastConnect 6200 subsystem that is touted by the company to double the Wi-Fi speed and range for online gaming and Web browsing compared to single antenna devices. Moreover, there is Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4+ technology to support fast charging and USB-PD sources.

Snapdragon 662 Specifications

The Snapdragon 662 has Spectra 340T ISP that also supports up to triple-cameras, with up to 48-megapixel main sensor. This ISP also supports HEIF file format and enables AI-based user experiences such as avatars, night photography, and face and voice authentication. For connectivity, there is the same Snapdragon X11 LTE modem. It is rated to offer download speeds up to 390Mbps along with 2-carrier aggregation, 2×2 MIMO, and 256-QAM modulation, and also 150Mbps peak upload speed.

Talking about the CPU department, the Snapdragon 662 SoC has Kryo 260 CPU which is a collection of four Cortex-A73 cores at 2GHz and four Cortex A53 cores at 1.8GHz, coupled with Adreno 610 GPU. The chip also supports Qualcomm Charge 3.0 along with support for Dual Charge and for AI tasks there is the Qualcomm Hexagon 683 DSP.

Snapdragon 460 Specifications

No need to say that the snapdragon 460 stands at the lower-end position of these mid-range SoC’s spectrum. The company claims a boost of up to 70% in performance over the Snapdragon 450. It is also claimed to deliver a two-times increase in overall system performance compared to the previous offering.

There is Qualcomm Spectra 340 ISP for image processing which supports up to triple rear cameras, along with 25-megapixel primary sensor. For Intelligence related tasks, there is Hexagon 683 DSP with Qualcomm Hexagon Vector eXtensions (HVX) and hardware-accelerated TensorFlow Lite for supporting newer user experiences.

There is an integrated Snapdragon X11 LTE modem that supports up to 390Mbps download speed and upload speeds of up to 150Mbps. This is the first time a Snapdragon 4 series’ SoC has been equipped with dedicated performance cores. The Snapdragon 460 SoC has Kryo 240 CPU with dedicated performance cores, paired with Adreno 610 GPU. There is also support for Quick Charge 3.0 along with Dual Charge support.
